The Planet Online application framework utilises the following core languages and protocols:

The system architecture incorporates a strong divide between authoring mode and end-user mode. All authoring is done from with a Perl web application framework, which incorporates a hybridised version of the eXtropia Open Source framework (see above).

The complete separation of authoring and front-end mode means that the delivery vehicle could be redesigned without changing the core system in any way. Thus, Planet Online could conceivably be deployed on alternate page rendering technologies such as  ASP / JSP / Cold Fusion / Python etc.  Presently, however, the only front-end technology supported is is PHP.

The only essential programming language for running the authoring system is Perl - which is available on all web server platforms.
